Samuel Augustus Bradley

Samuel Augustus Bradley

Through wisdom is a house builded;
And by understanding it is established (Proverbs 24:3)
Marion, SC--- Samuel Augustus Bradley, 90, died in Columbia (SC) on Thursday, January 12, 2012.  Wake services will be performed on Friday, January 20, 2012, at 6:00PM; and funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 12:00PM, at St. John AME Church in Marion, South Carolina.

     Samuel was born on June 2, 1921 in Bishopville, South Carolina, the son and one of 9 children of Robert Bradley and Mary Margaret Samuel Bradley.  The Bradley home, in the Red Hill community,  strongly emphasized learning wisdom from both Christian and formal education.   Samuel’s parents required regular family attendance to New Zion AME Church to learn that “The Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”, among other religious instruction.

     Samuel’s formal education included Cooper Hill, Rosenwall School, and Lincoln High in Sumter, SC.  He started his freshman college year at Morris College in Sumter before going to Allen University on a football scholarship.  He began a 65+ year membership with the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity during his undergraduate years.  Before graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor’s Degree from Allen University, he served in the Army during World War II.  Samuel often said that the best thing he got from Allen University was meeting and marrying Beulah Mae Taylor, his wife of 62 years who passed away in March 2009.

     Samuel and Beulah were blessed with two daughters, Deloris Bradley Harris and Cathy Bradley Page, and both had successful public school teaching careers like their father and mother. Residing in Marion (SC), Samuel abundantly provided for his family via a 38-year distinguished public school teaching career involving Terrell’s Bay High, Centenary, Lincoln High, Sumter, Poynor Middle, and Wilson High School in Florence, SC.  He was a faithful long time member of St. John A.M.E Church in Marion, and served many times as a delegate to important A.M.E. Church Lay Organizations and General Conferences.  Similarly, Samuel provided many years of loyal service by helping to recruit new college students to his beloved alma mater, Allen University.  In 2010, he was inducted into the Allen University Athletic Hall Of Fame.

     In addition to Deloris (Durham, NC) and Cathy (Columbia, SC), Samuel is survived and loved by:  his brother, Robert  (Lottie) Bradley, Jr (Bishopville, SC);  his sisters Blanche (Isaac, Sr) Joe of Bishopville, Lillie Mae Mickens (Bishopville);  his grandchildren Sonya Harris (Durham, NC), Charles Harris II (Chicago, IL), Samuel Murphy (Columbia, SC), Jennifer Harris (Durham, NC);  his great-grandson, Zion Murphy; his brother-in-law , Seabrook (Willie Mae) Taylor; his sisters-in-law Merlene Montgomery and Lucille Taylor; and a host of wonderful nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.  New Life Funeral Services, Bishopville (SC), will conduct burial services on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at New Zion AME Church Memorial Garden in Bishopville, SC.

The family of Samuel A. Bradley will receive friends and condolences at St. John’s  parsonage at 702 Mill Street, Marion, SC,  from Wednesday, January 18, 2012 through Saturday, January 21, 2012. Cathy may be reached by phone at 803-234-0333 and Deloris may be reached at 919-602-4038.

Cathy may be reached by phone at 803-234-0333 and Deloris may be reached at 919-602-4038            919-602-4038      .
