I had the opportunity on Sunday to speak with a classmate of mine that I haven't seen or spoken with in more than 40 years. Can you believe that? It feels like I'm only 40 most days. I was pleasantly surprised by the phone call. It's amazing how there are still many alumni out there who we really haven't seen, spoken with or no nothing about since school ended and in my case before it ended since I didn't graduate from Johnakin.
It amazes me how we can spend 12 years really attending school together and then not see each other for 40 years. I remember many of my classmates from school but some of them I can no longer remember their names especially if I have not run into them in the last 15-20 years and we didn't run in the same circles in school. If you call Liberty, Smith and Mill Street a circle. After all that was as far as momma and daddy would let us go unless we were walking downtown on the weekend to spend time with our cousins the Sellers.
I remember speaking to another class mate a couple of years back about all the little clubs that were in and around Marion. Who knew - I thought there were just Mr. Reese's place and the Ranch Club and the Arch Street Club which we couldn't be caught "dead" inside!! Then there was the "River" - how exciting was that?? I thought perhaps I lived on another planet when I was actually shown the other little night spots (one of them almost in my back yard) I was flabergasted! It just goes to show how much you really know about coming up in Marion.
Hopefully as time moves on and there aren't a lot of years left - we will have the opportunity to meet up with more of our classmates who feel the same as we do and that is that friendships made all those years ago still deserve our attention. Like my parents used to say "we never know who might be able to bring us a piece of bread when we're sick" so it's good to be friendly with everyone. I'm proud that most of my friends I still maintain contact with. It would be great if we each could reach out and touch one new classmate. Hopefully when we have the next reunion we will convince them to join us and embrace the Marionites! Our good years are decreasing as we get older. Thanks for ringing my phone friend!
